This summer, the Verbier Festival celebrates its first quarter of a century! Like every year, artists and audiences will come together to be part of incredible music in the heart of the Alps. With the 25th-anniversary celebrations permeating every aspect of this edition of the festival, the next few weeks are bound to be a period of reflection for artists and audience members alike.
This is particularly true for the team here at medici.tv. After a decade of summers spent streaming live from the Swiss Alps, we’ve certainly made a lot of memories… and been lucky enough to capture most of them on video! While it’s virtually impossible to pick just one, we know we’ll never forget twenty-one-year-old Yuja Wang’s Verbier début in 2008. With 5.9 million views on our YouTube channel, this awe-inspiring, seemingly physics-defying performance is clearly a fan favorite, too!
Did you know that the Verbier Festival was our very first partner? The festival played a key role in medici.tv’s origin story…
“When in July 2007, the Verbier Festival asked us to film nearly all of that year’s concerts, medici.tv hadn’t yet been born and words like “streaming” and “webcast” hadn’t yet made their way into the general public’s vocabulary… But the opportunity was too great to miss. We quickly improvised a streaming station in an RV… and we approached musicians with a wild idea: sharing their talents with music lovers around the world via the internet! Inspired by our first taste of success, we decided to create medici.tv on May 1st, 2008.”
—Hervé Boissière, founder and executive director of medici.tv
That summer, we broadcast Verbier Festival regulars like Esa-Pekka Salonen, Hélène Grimaud, Thomas Quasthoff, and Martha Argerich for the very first time—artists we’ve loved collaborating with regularly over the years and many of whom will be participating in the 25th-anniversary festivities this year, too! Let’s look back at one of the exceptional performances we experienced during that first edition in 2007:
On Tuesday, the medici.tv team arrived to begin setting up for our twelfth round of streaming at the Verbier Festival. This time around we’ve got an office and a full-fledged production team… we’ve come a long way since our first makeshift workspace in an RV!
This year’s festival promises to be the most exciting yet with Valery Gergiev taking on the role of music director and a special 25th Anniversary Gala concert complete with a surprise program. You especially won’t want to miss our marathon 10 hours of uninterrupted live streaming on July 25th as we take you behind the scenes and interview your favorite Verbier figures in the hours leading up to the star-studded Gala concert.
Don’t miss our coverage of the 2018 Verbier Festival, July 19th–August 5th!
